Initiation of a critical minerals study on mafic and ultramafic rocks

Institute of Geology Initiates State-Funded Genetic Modeling Project to Study Platinum-Group Element Potential

The Institute of Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) has officially launched a comprehensive basic research initiative titled "Genetic Modeling of Mineralization and Prospectivity of Platinum-Group Elements in Mongolia". Financed by the Science and Technology Fund of Mongolia (STF), the project addresses critical knowledge gaps regarding the distribution, genesis, and extraction potential of Platinum-Group Elements (PGE) within the region's vast mafic-ultramafic magmatic frameworks.
The state-backed project aligns with national strategic priorities to diversify Mongolia’s resource base beyond traditional copper and gold infrastructure. By focusing on highly siderophile elements—such as platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir), and osmium (Os)—the institute intends to establish an advanced exploration framework to support clean-energy supply chains.

Short note

About Us

The Mineral Resources and Metallogeny Sector at the Institute of Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) serves as the country’s leading authority on advanced metallogenic modeling. By investigating the complex accretionary frameworks of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), the sector bridges traditional fieldwork with modern geochemical, isotopic, and data-driven methods, directly enhancing our understanding of how major geodynamic events have shaped the concentration of Mongolia's key ore systems. The institutional leadership and specific sector management driving these initiatives are anchored by Dr. Turbold Sukhbaatar, who holds a PhD focused on tectonics, geodynamics, structural geology, and petrology with research specializing in the accretionary evolution of the CAOB and the targeting of Mongolian critical metals, and Dr. Ariunzaya Tsogoo, who is armed with a PhD in the physical and chemical sciences and directly oversees the sector's operational focus, leading the academic team tasked with modeling REE mineralization, copper-porphyry networks, and the landmark PGE genetic modeling project.
