New decade cooperation between Russia and Mongolia

The institutional framework for international geoscientific research underwent significant expansion with the official opening of the Tenth Karpinsky Geological Class at the Institute of Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) in Ulaanbaatar. Spearheaded by Pavel Khimchenko, General Director of the Karpinsky Institute (the All-Russian Scientific Research Geological Institute), and Dr. Turbold Sukhbaatar, Director of the MAS Institute of Geology, this joint initiative establishes a permanent scientific and educational hub designed to launch a new decade of systematic bilateral cooperation between Russia and Mongolia. During the formal opening ceremony, Academician S. Demberel, President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, delivered opening greetings that underscored the deep academic and strategic significance of the project. Developed in close partnership with the Russian state holding company JSC Rosgeologia and supported by representatives from the Embassy of the Russian Federation and Mongolia’s Ministry of Industry and Natural Resources, the platform transitions traditional cross-border field exploration into an advanced knowledge-sharing ecosystem. By stationing leading geologists to deliver direct training in digital geological modeling, advanced tectonic mapping, geodynamics, and applied geophysics, the initiative enhances the technical capacity of Mongolian specialists and students, effectively integrating Mongolia’s geological research sector into a global network of international academic collaboration.

Long-term partnership

Institute of Geology and Karpinsky Institute Sign Landmark MOU at Inauguration of Ulaanbaatar Geological Class

During the ceremony, Dr. Turbold Sukhbaatar, Director of the Institute of Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS), and Pavel Khimchenko, General Director of the Karpinsky Institute, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to solidify future geoscientific collaboration.
This formal agreement establishes the legal and operational framework for long-term partnership, explicitly linking the new Karpinsky Geological Class to ongoing joint initiatives.

Key Provisions

The bilateral agreement outlines several core pillars for future academic and industrial cooperation:
• Joint Field Research: Launching collaborative cross-border geological expeditions to map and analyze tectonic structures, with a specific focus on the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.
• Critical Mineral Assessments: Combining research efforts to identify, classify, and evaluate deposits of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and strategic metals essential for modern technologies.
• Data and Technology Exchange: Establishing protocols for sharing advanced geospatial data, analytical methodologies, and digital modeling frameworks between Russian and Mongolian researchers.
• Sustainable Infrastructure Development: Creating a framework for the joint publication of academic papers, mutual academic exchange programs, and the continuous modernization of Ulaanbaatar’s geological training facilities.
